This Month in Paid Media: August 2026

August felt like less about AI doing more, and more about platforms handing back control they’d taken away. A few small levers reappeared this month, and a newcomer looked a lot more grown-up.

Here are three updates that stood out to us in August:

YouTube launches Watch-While Ads

YouTube has introduced Watch-While Ads, a non-disruptive single-image format that sits below the video instead of pausing it, disappearing after 30 seconds or on manual close.

In practice, this means:

  • Ads no longer have to interrupt the viewing experience to get seen
  • The format is live across Demand Gen, PMax, and App Campaigns, so it’s already reachable at scale

This is a signal that disruptive formats have a ceiling, and platforms are betting that staying visible without annoying people can work just as well.

Google tests Channel Prioritisation controls for Performance Max

Google is testing a Channels Prioritisation feature setting inside PMax that lets advertisers nudge the CPA target up or down for individual channels (Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps).

The implications are straightforward:

  • This isn’t a fixed budget split, it’s a lever on how much PMax favours each channel
  • After years of PMax being a black box, this is one of the first real levers advertisers get back

Relevance and control, once fully hidden inside PMax’s automation, are starting to become adjustable again.

ChatGPT Ads adds automated bidding and platform targeting

ChatGPT Ads now has a “Maximize results” automated bid strategy, platform-level targeting (iOS/Android/Web), and one-day view-through conversion reporting.

In practice, this means:

  • ChatGPT Ads is starting to look like a mature ad platform rather than a beta test
  • Advertisers now have the reporting and targeting basics needed to actually evaluate it against Google and Meta

It’s worth testing early, before the platform matures further and the opportunity to get ahead of competitors narrows.

Looking across these updates, a few themes stand out:

  • Automated platforms are starting to give some manual control back, rather than taking more away
  • Ad experiences are shifting toward staying visible without being disruptive
  • Newer entrants like ChatGPT Ads are closing the gap with the established players faster than expected

For advertisers, the opportunity lies in testing early and staying close to the levers platforms are reopening.
